Pixel 8 Pro: So funktioniert das neue Video Boost HDR+ – Videos werden zur Verarbeitung in die Cloud geladen

 

Google hat mit den Pixel 8-Smartphones eine Reihe von neuen Kameratricks eingeführt, von denen mindestens einer noch nicht zur Verfügung steht: Das Pixel 8 Pro soll bis Jahresende einen Video Boost erhalten, der etwas Zeit und eine Cloudanbindung benötigt. Jetzt zeigt ein Teardown der aktuellen Google Fotos-App, wie das funktionieren soll. Die Angaben in der App unterstreichen, dass die Umsetzung ein wenig abenteuerlich ist.

Die Pixel 8-Smartphones erhielten neue Kamera-Hardware und bringen darauf aufbauend auch neue Kameratricks mit. Wir haben euch die neuen Software-Features schon vor dem Verkaufsstart umfangreiche vorgestellt, doch vor allem die Kategorie „Video Boost“ sorgte zu Beginn noch für Rätselraten. Jetzt gibt man sowohl im Google-Blog einen interessanten Einblick darin, worum es sich dabei handelt und ein Google Fotos-Teardown verrät, wie das Ganze funktioniert.

Erstmals bringt man HDR+ zu Videos, was zwar sehr schöne Video-Ergebnisse zur Folge hat, aber auch extrem rechen-intensiv ist. Wohl mehr, als ein modernes Smartphone leisten kann. Lest hier erst einmal das Original aus Googles Ankündigung:

HDR+ already helps you capture stunning photos on a smartphone with computational photography, and now we’re using the same algorithms to enable an all-new approach to computational video. Making that happen presents a challenge because there’s so much more data in a video than a photo. In fact, processing a one-minute 4K video at 30 frames per second is the same as processing 1,800 photos — a task no mobile phone can solve alone. But by combining the efficiency of Tensor G3 and the power of our data centers we were able to make HDR+ video a reality.

When you use Video Boost on Pixel 8 Pro, you’ll still receive a high-quality video right away, but the video will also upload to the cloud where our computational photography models are applied to your entire video. This process also makes Night Sight Video possible for the first time on Pixel, so you can create memories in low-light situations where you couldn’t before. Both features are coming later this year.

Um die Verarbeitung von HDR+ Videos auf dem Smartphone möglich zu machen, werden diese automatisch im Hintergrund in die Cloud geladen, dort optimiert und anschließend wieder auf das Pixel-Smartphone gesendet. Nutzer müssen allerdings nicht lange warten, denn sofort nach der Aufnahme steht eine High Quality-Version bereit, die nach erfolgreicher Verarbeitung automatisch durch die HDR+ Version ersetzt wird. Wie lange das dauert, hängt unter anderem von der Länge des Videos, der Internetanbindung, dem Akkustand und vielleicht auch von der Auslastung der Google-Server ab.

Die folgenden Strings finden sich in der aktuellen Google Fotos-App:

• “To boost your videos, turn on backup in settings, or back up this individual video”
• “To use Video Boost, you need to back up this video, which requires signing in with your Google Account”
• “Waiting to back up video”
• “Backing up for Video Boost. This may take some time. A notification will be sent when your video is ready.”
• “Boosting video quality. This may take some time. A notification will be sent when your video is ready.”
• “This may take some time depending on video length, internet speed, and battery status. A notification will be sent when your video is ready.”
• “Boosting your video won’t affect your phone’s battery life or performance, but it may take some time. A notification will be sent when your video is ready.”

Es zeigt sich, dass das Feature mit Wartezeit verbunden sein wird, die wohl signifikant ist. Wie bereits bekannt, wird das Video in die Cloud geladen, dort verarbeitet und anschließend wieder heruntergeladen. Nutzer können sich dann entscheiden, ob sie die alte Version, die neue Version oder beide behalten möchten.
